A Brief History of Netball

The game of netball can trace its origins from the development of basketball. When James Naismith invented the sport of basketball in 1891, female teachers also wanted a similar program for women that is not as strenuous as men’s basketball. Senda Berenson devised the rules for women’s basketball in 1892.

Clara Gregory Baer obtained a copy of Naismith’s basketball rules in 1895. Unfortunately, she misinterpreted some of Naismith’s drawings. This led to the creation of the no-go zones.

Martina Bergman-Osterberg introduced women’s basketball in 1895 at the Hampstead Physical Training College in London. There were already substantial revisions made to the game by 1897. It includes the division of the court into three zones. Around this time, the sport already had a new name: “net ball”.

Indoor Netball in Australia

Netball arrived in Australia in 1897. However, there are those who say that the new sport was established in Australia in the first decade of the 20th century. The sport spread throughout the British Empire between the 1900s and the 1950s.

Netball-playing countries began unifying the rules for the sport in 1957. It culminated in the establishment of the International Federation of Women’s Basketball and Netball in 1960. The founding members were Australia, England, New Zealand, The West Indies, and South Africa.

The very first World Championship netball tournament was held in 1963 in Eastbourne. The Championship occurs every 4 years. In 1998, netball was already included in the Commonwealth Games. Australia emerged victorious in that event. The IFWBN renamed itself as the International Netball Federation in 2012.
